This year I have a classroom of inquisitive first grade learners. They like to ask questions and enjoy helping each other learn. Above all, these children want to understand not only what answers are, but how and why they are obtained. For instance, when problems are placed before them, they are eager to pull out counters, use a number line, or draw a picture to help them find the answer. In our school, the first grade team collaborates. Our combined students interact with each other so that as teachers we can better meet their learning needs. Any hands-on math tools can be shared with all the first graders in our school. The goal is to help the little learners become deep thinkers in understanding addition and subtraction, build a strong foundation in place value, and understand how people use math to solve everyday problems. Students need the right hands-on tools to engage them to develop these attributes.
