My students are second language learners ~ meaning they come to school having spoken a language other than English at home. Some have learned a good amount of English and can function with minimal help. Others have never spoken a single word of English and are completely lost and terrified. Most, however, are somewhere in between. They have some survival English (conversational language) but need to develop a deeper understanding of the English language. These students are expected to attain the same levels as native English speakers in all areas such as standardized tests. They are some of the hardest working students ever because they are trying to reach a moving target. They range in age from kindergarten to 5th grade and represent about 10 different languages. We are a public school that is trying to meet their needs and help them to be productive citizens.
