I'm requesting a class set of Coffee Will Make You Black by April Sinclair. This is a great book that brings up issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality -- all important issues for teens to navigate in today's world! Teaching at a racially and ethnically diverse school, I know the importance of using a wide range of literature in my classroom. Students need to be able to see themselves reflected in the stories we read! As Nigerian-American author Chimamanda Adichie says, stories can be used "to dispossess and malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize." By using Sinclair's novel in my class, I hope to empower and humanize the lives of the many students who I know will resonate with her work.
