My students are 95% Hispanic aged 11 to 14. They come from low-income families who are struggling to support their children. Unfortunately, it's becoming cheaper to eat from the dollar menu so they do. Research shows that there are significant racial and ethnic disparities in obesity prevalence among U.S. children and adolescents. In 2007-2008, Hispanic boys, aged 2 to 19 years, were significantly more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white boys, and non-Hispanic black girls were significantly more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white girls. My students don't know any better. Our school in nestled in what most would consider the ghetto. But our students don't care. They are proud of our school. We have incredible attendance rates which may be because the meal they get at breakfast and lunch is the only meal they eat during the day. These kids have a real desire to learn more than core subjects. Knowledge is power and we want to instill that in them. Knowledge of nutrition.
