Our school is in a low socioeconomic area. There is also a constant revolving door of students because of the large apartment areas that surround our school. These students have the biggest hearts, but have the odds stacked against them. Most come from rough backgrounds and I can only imagine what they have gone through in their short time on this earth. My wish as their teacher is to give them a glimpse of the kindness of the world; to let them know that there are people who care and want the best for them. Amazingly, my students are some of the most hard-working students I have ever known. They have surprised me more than once with their perseverance and determination. They have a voracious appetite for books and are thriving on the Daily Five program I have set up. They beg for it and if we should miss it, they get upset! My hope is they keep their intense love for books throughout their school careers!
