Our school is a diverse building made up of over 800 students in the upper elementary grades. As a basic skills instructor, 100% of my students are struggling readers and English Language Learners. The vast majority of my students read on a first or second grade level in the fifth grade. As my students struggle to keep up with their peers in class, the gap between their ability and the grade level expectations continues to widen, and they fall further and further behind.
