I teach a zero hour AP Chemistry class (6:00 - 7:00 am) at my high school four days a week in order to avoid conflicts with other AP classes. I have the most dedicated students that anyone could imagine. They are aware of the need for this class because they plan to be science, engineering, nursing or pre-med majors in college and make sacrifices to take this course. It is very difficult for them to arrive at school one hour before the rest of the students and then stay another eight hours at school before band, sports and drama practice after school... only to wake up at 5 am the next day for chemistry class. Our high school is a rural, medium-sized (1500 student) school that is about 50% low-income and minority. Most students cannot afford to attend a four-year university after high school and elect to attend one of the two nearby junior colleges.
