In the community that I teach many of the students are living below the poverty line. They are also not exposed to many different cultures. Poverty prevails and that diminishes the ability to purchase books. The public library is not in close proximity to the neighborhoods of the students. As readers, it is important for them to be guided as they read. For the special needs students, text has to be differentiated. Unfortunately, due to a lack of education, and resources, students do not have that support system in place at home. These students are hungry for knowledge and opportunity. They desire to learn. It's important for them to have an ability to read for pleasure as well as for academic success. My students would like to be able to read books that are of high interest. Our school library doesn't have a wide assortment of realistic fiction for them to choose from.
