This year ALL my students will participate in literature circles at their reading level(differentiation). These literature circles give me the opportunity to introduce new authors, series, and genres to my students, plus they give my students the opportunity to practice skills learned in a mini lesson. Who wouldn't want to escape the mundane of basel readers to read an awesome chapter book while learning the state standard reading skills? We will get lost in our books! I will meet with students in small group literature circles 2x a week for 30 minutes each. They will not be using a text book or worksheets. Instead we will read this quality literature that I am requesting, which will allow me to assess through observing, discussions and interactive notebooks. I can also assess fluency by listening to students read. After reading a page, paragraph, or chapter, I can ask questions of specific students that are based on a targeted skill(s) we have been working on in our mini lessons.
