We are in a public school system and our class consists of 26 first graders of many different cultures with a variety of abilities. One of our first priorities is to develop a sense of community where everyone has a voice and is respected for who they are. This takes practice and a great deal of instruction. When students are calm and relaxed, they are able to listen and learn about each other. When issues arise, they are taught how to handle those in an acceptable way. By using relaxation and teaching students how to be strong in dealing with stressors in their lives, they will be better able to listen and learn. Mats will give them a special place to practice calming techniques and feel valued for their efforts.
