The vast majority of my students are from an urban community in Northern California. Many face the typical issues faced by other urban communities: violence, drugs, poverty, crime, etc. In spite of this, my students are resilient and are serious about their education. My high school is one of tradition. It has served generations of students, including some impressive alumni. It also has an active alumni association that provides support to our student body of approximately 300 students. Not many things are more gratifying than seeing young people strive to graduate high school to maintain this strong tradition and pride. I teach approximately 125 students daily. They are in grades nine through 12, ages 14 through 19. There are significantly more male than female students. Some students are faced with dire circumstances including juvenile justice issues and homelessness. Our school is the constant safe-place in their world where they can plan and work towards a life goal.
