I teach 24 emerging to nearing proficient struggling readers on a team of 144 students. They are ten and eleven year olds who don't like to read and do not choose to read even when it is assigned as class work or homework. They view reading as boring and difficult. They attend a school where 37% of the students read below grade level. Only one of the twenty four students have admitted to reading a book on their own. Our state has adopted CCSS (Common Core State Standards)and our New Mexico state assessment created by PARCC is going to be challenging, even for my proficient readers. 45% of the reading material found on this assessment is nonfiction. My goal is to teach my struggling readers some basic strategies and skills to better help them comprehend nonfiction text. I don't want them to drop out of school down the road because reading is too difficult, but instead I would like to provide them with the tools that will help them comprehend their core texts and pass their classes.
