We are a public middle school in a Mississippi college town. While many students belong to the families of starving professors, many live in the five housing projects in town. Our school is a Title I school, meaning over half the students receive free or reduced price lunches. Because of the poverty, we also provide meals throughout the summer, and free breakfast to all students, regardless of status. The school is over half African-American. Our Latino population is rapidly growing, and without good teaching will soon contribute to our state's notorious reputation for low achievement. My doctoral research indicates that students from minority and low socioeconomic subgroups learn best from conceptual models, and from problem-solving centered instruction. I also teach the only inclusion mathematics class in the grade, with a dozen fully classified special education students immersed in the regular classroom, with a dedicated special education teacher alongside.
