Our population of students come from an impoverished area. The students I teach are lacking the necessary tools to ensure success in language development. Their writing is directly correlated with their slang. I am a general education teacher who loves to see my students succeed and knows what it takes to achieve this goal. The majority of my lessons are designed to encourage the students to read and write deeper and think more critically. Georgia has adopted new standards beginning this year that will integrate reading, writing, and language arts. Students are expected to produce writing samples that demonstrate competencies in all genres of reading and writing. Each language arts standard will be addressed collaboratively with the unit so students will need to perform these tasks within their writing tasks or identify them in the reading texts.
