My students are in kindergarten in a New York State public school. They are anxious and excited to become readers and writers. Our school has a well-stocked book room, however the non-fiction choices are limited. My students enjoy reading and learning about non-fiction and these books will help in this process. With the new Common Core Standards being implemented in my classroom, there is an emphasis on reading non-fiction. 50 percent of what students read and are exposed to in grades K-5 must be non-fiction. This is why I feel that my students need more non-fiction options for read to self time in addition to whole group read-alouds.
