The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller, is the inspiration for this project. Her approach to growing a love of reading is simple: affirm the reader in every student, allow students to choose their own books, carve out extra reading time, model authentic reading behaviors, discard timeworn assignments such as comprehension worksheets, and develop a classroom library filled with high-interest books. Our Tweens are savvy, up to date and for better or worse, heavily influenced by media. Thus many of our existing collections were not engaging enough. By sprinkling in a few new purchases I was able to keep their interest going. The books I have chosen are award winning, currently published in a variety of genres. Refugee by Alan Gratz, for example, intertwines the survival of three families- from Cuba, from Syria, and from the Holocaust. The three tales bring to life not only the historical/current events but allow students to ponder difficult life decisions through prose that many of them face. Great literature and a comfortable spaces are a powerful combination. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. This project hopes be the spark that will ignite the transition to a flexible seating classroom filled nooks for learning. Flexible seating allows students to make choices that work best for them when working. Currently they choose to work in a variety of locations: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or laying on the floor. How many times do we see people working at a local coffee shop instead of their office? The Big Joe bean bag seats will be a great place for independent reading or a book club circle, the futon a place to collaborate with a partner. And of course, the bookcases to spotlight our new collection.
