I teach 4 classes of 7th and 8th grade students, of whom 99% are minorities. Many of them come from low-income homes, but their parents are sending them to our charter school in East Chicago so they will have the opportunity to be prepared for college and graduate from a four-year university. Once I gave in to my students' begging for the opportunity to crack open our classroom library, I quickly realized I did not have enough books. In order for students to have that amazing experience that you had with your favorite book, they need to have the opportunity "to get lost in a good book." Filling our classroom library will allow them to do just that. The books also come in many different reading levels to cater to the needs of all students in my classroom. Each student has the potential to enjoy reading, but they must be given a book they can get invested in first.
