My sixth students are in a diverse Texas middle school with varying range of reading abilities and access to books. Over half of my students are from low income households. They love having access to books and are looking forward to learning to read (and pass the dreaded state exam) in innovative ways. As a reading teacher I want to be able to teach my students with novels and short stories to keep their interest alive. Students do better with novels in their hands and therefore feel more connected to the reading. Our goal is for every student to have a book in their hand during this unit.
