I work with emotionally disturbed elementary-aged students, from first to fifth grade. My students lack the coping skills that most of us have to deal with feelings of anger, frustration and depression. At the elementary level, we service children who have been molested, witnesses to a horrible act or crime, and have been the victims of terrible neglect during their formative years. Few of them still live with biological parents. Most of them were exposed to drugs while they were still in their mother's wombs. In the school setting, they display hyperactivity, inattentiveness, frequently get into fights, frequently display oppositional defiance, etc. Our goal in my program is to reach these kids before they go to middle school, before their social problems get them involved with gangs and crime, and before their academic future is beyond repair.
