I teach government. Like the government, my students work collaboratively and they need the tools, work area, timing, and transitions to make them effective. Collaborative work is the backbone of understanding. Learning without context fades right after the unit exam. Having students work with concepts in stations with a slightly different focus allows students to both struggle with content and develop understanding. Struggling and context promote understanding beyond the unit exam. Working in groups allows students to tackle more complex problems because each student brings different perspectives, skills, and prior knowledge. Using timers and transitions will allow me to spend my time interacting with students and their questions and not spending my resources managing the movement from one station to the next.
