I work in a dual language elementary school. Half of our students are English Language Learners (ELLs) and the other half are Spanish Language Learners (SLLs). Both groups are eager to learn the other language and more about the local community and larger world in which they are growing up. Typically, students' parents speak another language at home, so school is the only place where they are able to practice their second language. Our school is a Title 1 school and many students have access to school materials and literacy resources at home. My school provides these students with a great education and the space to learn in a safe way. Our teachers come from many different backgrounds and have many different strengths and talents. They are all bilingual and work tirelessly to ensure that our students are too by seeking out Spanish language resources wherever possible, and when they are not designing their own.
