I service resource special education students in grades 4-6. These students receive supplemental support in reading and math. The majority of my students are Hispanic males, who struggle significantly with reading. The students that I teach want nothing more than to independently read and understand a book that they pick up. They are too old to be interested in books that are at their actual reading ability, which is why HIGH INTEREST/LOW READABILITY are so vital to their success. The students attend a neighborhood school that is ethnically, culturally and economically diverse. It is currently serving over 700 pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students. Of the students that attend my school 32% are Limited English Proficient and 73% are Low Income. The largest demographic is Hispanic. Resources that are appropriate for special education are hard to come by because they are so very specific to each individual students needs.
