In an effort to best reach our struggling students, our school administration and staff at our charter school decided to create a transitional first grade, or bridge, classroom for the 2012-2013 school year. Always up for the challenge, I volunteered to teach this classroom. My class consists of 22 students, all of which passed the kindergarten AZ standards but were not quite ready for our rigorous first grade classrooms, especially with the transition to the Common Core. While a good portion of my students are English Language Learners and have Individual Education Plans, they are ALL struggling with the independence needed to effectively follow along in a text book and stay on task during a lesson. The purpose of this class is to teach the same first grade content, but at a slower pace and in a more hands-on way. Our goal is to have these students ready to proceed into a second grade classroom by the end of the year.
