My 9th and 11th grade students are all from a very high-poverty urban area in West Seattle. Many of my students are ELL (English Language Learners) and are reading anywhere from 2nd grade to 10th grade. Because some have entered into the United States much later, there is a real need for them to "catch up" or be reading at their appropriate grade level. This is even more urgent for them now as all students need to pass the HSPE (High School Proficiency Exam) in Reading and Math or they will be unable to graduate high school. I know this is a real concern to many of the students. All I continue to iterate to them is to READ as much as possible, read anything and everything! Our school was built in 1959 and is in dire need of remodeling. We have resources but they are very limited. A leveled classroom library is important but may not be a priority as our school has many other projects that do need to come first. Thus, I am requesting donors from donors choose.org to help my students.
