My school is a K-5 elementary in one of the highest crime areas of Philadelphia. Many of our students are victims of trauma, live in unstable environments with drug or domestic abuse, or are in the foster care system. Some are hungry and lack basic needs. For these students, school is the most positive aspect of lives weighed down with problems that have no easy solutions. A significant portion of my job involves helping these students to de-escalate and verbalize their issues so that they can return to their classes with a positive attitude toward learning. I see an average of 10-12 students on a 1:1 basis during the day, and facilitate anger-management groups for students with poor impulse control. I'm slowly furnishing a "calming corner" in my office with various tools to assist volatile students to calm themselves and return to their learning environment quickly.
