"When will we ever use math?" My students have never been given the opportunity for that question to surface in their minds. They KNOW how essential math is to a successful future and they work towards high achievement every day. My 10th and 11th graders come from loving and caring families but are faced with much more adversity than the average high school student. 99 percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Most of them are of color with the racial make up of my school being 90 percent African American. Despite their socioeconomic status, my students are college-bound leaders that have amazing stories and deserve only the best. They have grown up in one of the most dichotomous cities in America: Charleston, South Carolina- where affluent historic plantation houses are scattered around urban poverty. Many of their peers attend schools where access to resources is a given upon enrollment. My students deserve the same access and shouldn't be limited because of their zip code!
