Should people own exotic animals as pets? In this unit of study, students will read an editorial and commentary from our textbook that debates the issue of owning exotic pets. In collaboration with their science animal research project, my students will argue whether or not their assigned animal should be owned as a pet. The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate, will help me teach the value of considering more than one side of an argument. The book is written from the viewpoint of a silverback gorilla named Ivan who is kept in a glass cage at a zoo.
