As we look to make pandemic teaching more engaging, why not kill two birds with one stone? We intend to use the novel, The Martian, to introduce students to the majority of science concepts that will be covered in the 8th grade curriculum as well as throw some English Language Arts in there, too. We will use the novel as our framework to refer to as we cover physics and astronomy. When each student has their own copy of the book, they are able to work independently, then bring discussion points back to the classroom. We also hope to use the novel as a jumping off point for debate and the endless curiosity the study of space ignites in all of us.
