My students are intelligent, resilient, loving kids. They come from a disadvantaged minority community where they have attended failing schools for most of their lives. As a result, my students read at grade school reading levels. The expectations that others have for them and even the expectations they have for themselves are pervasively low because they are 9th and 10th graders who are very clearly on track to fail out of high school. It is imperative that I remediate reading deficiencies so that my kids can start reading on grade level and build the confidence they need to be on a path towards graduating high school and becoming college ready.
