I teach AVID students. AVID is a national organization that emphasizes a curriculum based in strong instructional strategies and a college-going environment. AVID is geared towards students who are future first-generation college graduates who have the desire and motivation to succeed in school. They have the potential to become high achieving students with the support that this program gives, whether it be taking rigorous courses, learning proper note-taking, developing inquiry skills, and/or discovering the benefits of college. My students are a special bunch who have bought into the message and philosophy and are the best group of 8th graders. The AVID curriculum requires them to take Algebra 1 (a high school class) as eighth graders, meaning they are skipping 8th grade math curriculum. I've gotten to know them as 7th graders who were just beginning the program, and now, I get to teach them Algebra 1.
