My students attend a school where more than thirty languages are spoken. It is a diverse community, and therefore it is important for our literature to reflect an equally diverse range of perspectives. Many of my students often feel that the odds are against them-- they feel disillusioned by the role school has played in their lives in the past, and they need an opportunity to tackle challenging work and feel successful in doing so. Supporting them shows them, indeed surprises them, that complete strangers care enough about their success to donate to their opportunities to learn.
