My classroom began utilizing cooperative learning groups a few years ago. Test scores have been on the rise ever since. Instead of students sitting in their seats listening to me talk and lecture, students are interacting with each other in their cooperative learning groups. Each student has a role in their group to ensure the group runs smoothly. Students are able to earn points when they are caught active listening or following our class goal for the week. My principal and I have already put much of our own money into ensuring these cooperative learning groups are a success. Students have laminated task cards, so they know their job. Each group also has a bin with learning tools like markers, pencils, crayons, whiteboards, etc. to make sure they are prepared for almost any task. Donations to help secure proper cooperative learning tables would help my students tremendously. When walking the room to assist students, it is evident that the current desks get in the way of learning. Many times there are five or six students trying to have a conversation. With the current desks, there are at least one or two who are left out of the conversation because they cannot hear. When they stand to try and hear better, it often creates a hectic environment. I am sure having these cooperative learning tables will increase student learning like never before.
