Basic supplies are essential to a successful functioning STEM lab. My STEM class involves engaging, active learning through hands-on activities and team-based projects. Students learn the fundamentals in their core classes and are able to put into practice math, science, physics, and engineering principles in the STEM lab. Projects we design and build include: marble runs, solar ovens, popsicle stick bridges, catapults, Rube Goldberg machines, egg drops, stomp rockets, pasta pods, puff mobiles, ferris wheels, roller coasters, balloon cars, zip lines, towers, cranes, etc. These projects require a lot of supplies - tape, hot glue, straws, craft sticks, foam board, pizza boxes, string, cups, balloons, foil, and rubber bands are just to name a few. Providing students the supplies and the opportunity to create and explore will help maximize student learning amid the pandemic, encourage problem solving, critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration skills, which are necessary to address challenges of today and the future. STEM is an important aspect of our society and research shows STEM occupations are growing at a rate of 24%. My goal is to pique every student’s curiosity and help them develop self-confidence in their ideas and learn that they can make a difference.
