The students in my district are amazing!! However, we have recently been hit hard with the housing market collapse. We have two areas of low income/government subsidized housing. The apartment complexes offer affordable housing but it means that we are constantly getting new kids and losing students throughout the school year. Consistency and stability is nonexistent. We have teachers who travel to these apartments during the summer and teach lessons or read to the children. We also offer Operation Food Search to these children. The kids tend to be strong and can take care of their self due to the fact that they come from a single parent home or both parents are working hard to make ends meet. We have the third highest free and reduced lunch numbers in our district. As teachers, we want our students to be reading and learning all the time. I feel with the appropriate reading materials, I can accomplish this.
