Current research shows that gross motor activitities provide a positive impact on brain development for young children. Music and movement can be used to illustrate a concept, introduce letter sounds, and just to simply shake some sillies out! Kindergarten is changing, and there is little to no time left for the valuable art of playing. My students need an iPod and wireless speakers to enhance their learning through music and movement. Music is used frequently in my classroom in conjunction with our curriculum. Students retain important information while they are having FUN and moving their bodies! If you were to visit our classroom, you would see music and movement used to illustrate the life cycle of a chicken, to teach letter sounds, and to solve math problems. Many of our students do not get the physical activity that they need to stay healthy. We use movement as a warm up activity to activate our brains for learning, to help re-gain focus, or just because we feel the need to sing and dance! After all, what is kindergarten without a little bit of fun?
