My students come from Spanish-speaking homes and most do not have exposure to English-speakers until kindergarten. I work at a Title I school where 90% of my students are living in poverty. My early learners are eager and excited to learn how to read but they are at a clear disadvantage than most students that are native to the English language. The American school system is based on the English language and if my students fall behind in early elementary they will likely be playing a game of catch-up their entire life. I am dedicated to ensuring my students become English language readers and speakers before they leave my classroom.
