My school is a rural one. Many of these students weren't ever read to at home. A good many of them receive no support at home. They don't have books at home. Some never see their parents read. Some of their parents don't know how to read themselves. They will be starting First Grade at a disadvantage because they are not reading. First grade is such a challenging time. These non-readers are expected to go from the RB level (below Level A) all the way to Level I to be considered on-grade level.
