I am a second grade teacher at an urban public school in Massachusetts. My students come from low income families and speak a myriad of languages. We are a culturally rich school community and very excited about books. Two years ago, I was inspired by Dan Gutman's book Miss Daisy is Crazy, and started a school wide read-a-thon to get the students and staff to read 2.5 million pages. At the end of the year, we celebrated this accomplishment with a Carnival celebration. Last year we read over 3 million pages. Literacy is one of my passions and this year my students are learning to read as writers. It is wonderful to witness when a students notice an author's style of writing, a text feature, or discover a type of genre they had never noticed before. They then try it out in their own writing journals. It is amazing to see how inspired they are to write.
