First grade is such an important year for students to learn how to read. When working with this age group I want to grab their attention and infuse their minds with the confidence that they can read. Many of my students start first grade with a wide range of experience and abilities in reading. A small group of my student have parents or siblings at home reading to them consistently. At the same time, a majority of parents depend on our school to supply students with any and all experience in reading due to lack of time, lack of resources or language constraints.
