My students are inner city kids from Indianapolis. They are passionate and opinionated. Unfortunately, their passion rarely transfers to reading. They seldom see books they can relate to. They are interested in books about race and teenage angst because these are real-life issues they face everyday. Some of my 8th grade students never completed an entire book until they came to my classroom. This is unfair. My students need the resources that their suburban counterparts have. They need books they will read and enjoy to help them on their journey to become life-long readers. This can only be accomplished by students reading books based on their levels and interests. Currently we have a modest classroom library and with your help we can expand it and give students the experience of actually loving to read. Remember that first book you really loved? Some of my 8th graders are still waiting for that experience.
