My students are some of the most driven and hardest working young people with whom I have had the privilege of teaching in my young career. They have a clarity and understanding of the status quo of education inequity that alludes many adults I know. They know that their circumstances - growing up in a low income neighborhood and attending a Title I school - are very different from those of their more affluent peers in other neighborhoods within our district. We have several conversations about the opportunity gap and need for students at our school to work harder and be smarter in order to take advantage of opportunities to go to college and change the world. Several of my students aspire to become doctors and nurses. A handful spend their recess time writing fictional stories to make each other laugh and dream. Still others are tremendous scholar athletes who perform on the court and in the classroom.
