My ESL students come from all over the world! Some are refugees from Nepal whose parents escaped slavery and lived in tents provided by the United Nations before being resettled here. Others come from China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Some students are from war-torn Syria or Pakistan. Many students are Hispanic, from places like Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Ecuador. Our ESL classroom has the most diverse mix of Asian, African and Hispanic students you could imagine! Our K-8 school is a good public school and we do well on our state tests, but our student families live in a low income, tough urban neighborhood notable for being a "United Nations" of immigration. Our school district is facing severe budget cutbacks and yet, our immigrant mothers and fathers gladly send their children to our public school because we have such dedicated and talented teachers.
