My kindergarten students attend a rural school in Kentucky with 75%-85% of the students in each room qualifying for free/reduced lunch. There is a strong sense of family in the community, but many of the adults did not graduate from high school, and there is not a strong literacy base in the homes. Students do not automatically come to school with a love of books or stories. We have to do a lot of work at the school level to not only help them become readers, but help them learn to enjoy reading.
