In regards to state tests, my students struggle with reading standards much more than the standards of writing. Studies show that reading choice empowers students to enjoy reading--causing them to become lifelong readers--making them college and career ready. Students will use these selected novels to read independently. They are permitted to read and abandon books at their discretion. Within the Reading and Writing Workshop model, my students will read at least 10 minutes a day (sometimes more) while annotating and using other close-reading strategies to enhance the reading experience. Many students claim that they don't enjoy reading, but my mantra is: You just haven't found the right book. By fulfilling this independent book project, I'm hoping that it will be a game-changer for some students. With new books added to our classroom library, there will be more choice, more variety, and more diversity among our shelves. Thank you for your consideration in regards to our project.
