I teach in a school where 100% of our students are on free lunch. Living in poverty often limits their access to high-interest texts. Consequently, they risk decreased home literacy, limited reading strategies, and diminshing engagement in school reading activities. In third grade, I had the idea to loop all the way to fifth with my class, hoping to improve their education and social skills by providing consistency and a safe, supportive learning environment. We are now entering fifth grade together. The results so far have been incredible: strong friendships, positive peer support systems, trust in me as their teacher, and a positive, confident attitude towards learning. In third grade, a majority of my class struggled with reading, but by fourth grade, nearly all were voracious readers! Even the ones who struggled enjoyed reading books on their level. I believe this is due to our "book clubs" in which I facilitate and support small groups as they read and discuss quality literature.
