We all know that sitting for too long can get boring, and adults are the worst at sitting through lectures, meetings, or classes. We need to stand, stretch, and move around to get the blood flowing again. Being able to do this helps us refocus on the task at hand. Asking 9-10 year old students to sit all day long is an almost impossible task. This can tend to lead to boredom and unfocused students, which, in turn, then leads to classroom behavior problems. After introducing flexible seating, I noticed a drastic change in my daily classroom engagement. Students are allowed to pick where they sit every day. They choose between yoga balls, a loveseat, saucer chairs, recliner, bicycle seat, or traditional desks. I even have a loveseat made from milk crates and a baby mattress! Most students will learn very quickly where they can and cannot sit. The entire point of flexible seating unfolds in front of my eyes each year, and it amazes me to see the responsibility and self-awareness of my students. They learn where they learn the best. Like previous stated, I already offer a flexible seating environment in my classroom. However, I am missing an option that I believe can make a difference. Some students prefer to stand while learning. I have noticed during the past 3 years of offering these choices that several students will end up standing in their space. These desks will give them the opportunity to stand while continuing to have adequate work space to read, complete fractions, or learn the dreaded long division skills needed in 4th grade. Learning can make students feel quite antsy at times, and these standing desks would allow them the freedom to move about while continuing to stay focused.
