The students that attend the school I teach at are quite diverse when compared to other high schools in our district. But they are also very inclusive of their peers. This is the fourth high school I have taught at and I have never seen such a universal caring that the students have for each other. However, they also come with some educational baggage: under-performing in mathematics. Our school has the lowest math (and science) scores across the district. In fact, around five years ago our school was able to offer about five separate AP Calculus classes. The last several years we have averaged only one AP Calculus class. There has been a significant decline in the "average mathematical ability" of our students. While the reasons can be debated far and wide, the bottom line is we have to face the reality that there are only a few short years to turn our students around so that they are ready for the rigors of college level mathematics.
