My kids are from a tough little neighborhood near Los Angeles, Ca. They are all very street smart but lack the book smarts that are going to take them to a real life of independence. Over 50% of them are far below grade level in ELA. Most of them can't recall the last time they actually read a novel. They lack empathy for others and sadly a genuine love for learning. This is not their fault. Apathetic teachers, struggling parents, financial burdens and general hardships in life have put school on the back-burner for them. However, I am inspired to change the culture at my school, beginning with my own class because I believe my kids have big dreams.
