As a reading intervention teacher, I work with students from first to sixth grade. My role at my school is to help at-risk students develop their literacy skills and become proficient readers. Each student has his/her own reading challenges; however, all of them struggle with reading fluency. Despite their struggles and deficiencies, my students really want to improve their reading skills and aspire to become proficient readers. For my students, reading often becomes laborious because they are busy focusing on decoding each word and they do not have automatic word recognition, and as a result, reading comprehension is compromised. Sadly, these are the students who, in the future, become less confident about their reading skills and sometimes become unmotivated to read. My student population needs engaging and meaningful literacy activities to boost intrinsic motivation, develop their reading skills, and foster a love for reading.
