The boys and girls at our school are reading machines! They enter the media center with an attitude of expectancy, and they will hunt for a "just right" book until they find the perfect one. Whether it's a pretend princess pursuing escape through fiction or a future explorer planning an expedition with the help of a non-fiction book, our students know that books hold the key to the future. Many students are daily visitors to the media center, and a few make multiple trips to replace books that they have read earlier in the day. Some are challenged by Accelerated Reader (AR) goals, and some read purely for pleasure. Teachers send individual students as needs arise, and class groups come occasionally to restock a class's reading library. Our students and their families support our literacy projects with great enthusiasm and remarkable spending when our high poverty level is considered. Reading is recognized as the basis for all learning.
